North & South Wheatley Local and Family History Society
This local group is currently active and has a range of talks and activities through 2022. Click here for details.
Clarborough & Welham IT Group also provides support for family historians including a detailed Handbook covering many topic areas. For a sample worksheet from the Handbook BMD Certificates - how to get them, click here...
A cautionary note! The bedrock of family history (genealogy) research are the birth, marriage and death (BMD to family historians) certificates of our relatives. These can be obtained for £9.25 from either the General Register Office (GRO) or local Register Offices. However.... Beware of companies overcharging for replacement Birth, Marriage or Death certificates. A number of private services have been set up online, which often appear to be official. They may pay to appear at the top of internet search results and listings on websites to grab your attention. But these websites can charge you extra "administration fees" which can add up to £30 or more and some of them ask you to call premium rate telephone lines for their advice and services. Essentially they offer exactly the same service as the official ones - don’t pay over the odds!

Retford Library Family History Group members come from a broad range of experiences and interests; from ‘new recruits’ just setting out on their discoveries through to experienced hands able to share knowledge and experiences. Everyone is welcome to join this vibrant and supportive group.
Retford Library has a dedicated Local History section and (like all Nottinghamshire Libraries) has a subscription to the online databases of Ancestry.com which is FREE in the library to all Library Card holders. Nottinghamshire Libraries also have free subscription to 19th Century British Library Newspapers archive. Use of these databases is one component of the Group’s programme.
Library Cards may be obtained at the library in person at which point a single means of identification will be required (driver’s licence, household utilities bills, etc. - anything in fact with name and home address on it.)
The use of online resources forms part of the program of this group with particular emphasis on those which are FREE (a personal annual subscription to Ancestry’s full suite of databases, for instance, would cost in excess of £150!). We also make use of the library’s ‘paper’ collections of historical records as well as introducing members to facilities such as microfilm and microfiche readers which are standard ‘kit’ in all archives right up to the National Archives themselves.
It should be emphasised that this is a guided, self-help, group - it does not provide a search service for members; members do their own searching! See our linked Genealogy Links page for some resources to get you started.
Nottinghamshire Libraries website is always a good resource and the Picture-the-Past website is another invaluable repository of - you guessed - old photos. We also understand that other local resources are keen to support the group including Nottinghamshire Archives (see our Archives section for links) and Bassetlaw Museum.
