Important local - and not so local - information is held in Retford Library and Bassetlaw Museum but far larger collections are available in county archives such as that in Nottingham.
If you are new to accessing archives, do investigate Retford Library’s Local Collection (upstairs from main reception). Staff are available to help you get started - skills picked up here apply to all archives right up to the National Archives. To visit the National Archives online, follow this link. Also, see Retford Library Family History Group for more opportunities to get into these collections - and much more besides!
Great news! Nottingham Archives has re-opened after extensive development work:
Nottinghamshire Archives reopened to the public on 28 April 2015, following our closure as part of a £2.5m investment project to extend the archives building and preserve the county's rich heritage for future generations.

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire Archives is appealing for volunteers for the following two projects, including inputting earlier catalogues onto Excel databases which can be transferred onto NAWCAT (Nottinghamshire Archives Worldwide Catalogue. It currently holds over 15,000 catalogue entries but this only represents a small percentage of the catalogues of the archive’s total holdings. There are still 47 years worth of catalogues to add to the web! The Archive is also looking for volunteers to work from home or at their local library to enter data onto Excel of bishop’s transcripts catalogues. Between 2005 and 2010, a group of volunteers listed all the bishop’s transcripts (contemporary copies of the parish registers). The resultant catalogue for the earliest series, from c.1600 to 1815, again needs entering onto Excel so that it can be transferred onto NAWCAT. For more click here...
