Here we also gather together commemorations for the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 - ‘The Great War’ - which for Britain began on 4th August, 1914.
Pete Cox and friends have been researching and visiting the resting places or memorials to those ‘local lads’ who ‘failed to return’ from the conflict. These are being remembered in issues of Clarborough & Welham Newsletter as close as possible to the centenary of their deaths, starting with the Spring 2015 issue. See our Newsletter page here...
On June 14th, 2014 a Summer Tea (with Retford Male Voice Choir Musical Memories) was held by Clarborough & District W.I. during which a dedication of the trees and bench plaque provided by Clarborough & Welham Parish Council in honour of the service men who gave their lives in World War 1 took place. The plaque reads:
Trees in this area have been planted in memory and recognition of all those from the Clarborough and Welham Parish who gave their service and sacrifice in
WW1 conflict 1914 -1918
The original Roll of Honour memorials in the Parish Church of St.John the Baptist
have been thoroughly renovated and a re-dedication ceremony
took place on the evening of 11th November, 2014.
