[28th July, 2013] Retford Library's Family & Local History Group is free and open to anyone with an interest in genealogy or local history. At our last meeting on July 22nd Sam Waller dropped in from Yorkshire! He will be returning again in September but was visiting to start his search for information about Oliver Basher and his motor cycle engineering enterprise in Retford at the turn of the 20th century. Sam has one of the only remaining Basher cycles and is in the process of restoring it and also trying to fill in the background to Oliver Basher and his relationships to Retford.
Our group has already tentatively identified aspects of Oliver's life with both birth (1868) and death (1960) recorded in East Retford - but currently can't find any local reference to a marriage even although Sam gave Oliver's wife's forename as Levinia.
So, the challenge is there - can anyone provide any information about Oliver Basher and his motorcycle adventures or any other leads? Any information should be directed to Retford Library (01777 708 724) for the attention of The Family History Group.
[15th May, 2013] I'm searching for my relatives, descendants of George Allison (born 1870 in Worlaby, Lincs) and his wife Nellie Good (born 1875 in Woodhouse, Yorks). Their children were almost all born in the Retford district: John William (b.Woodhouse, 1899), Charles (1901), Rosamond Mary (1904), George Edward (1910), Dora (1915). I think Rosamond married Albert Briggs and Dora married Thomas Riley. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Dear Clarborough Parish Councillors
Looking at your website I see you have been busy arranging events to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Whilst going through your old records I wonder if you came across any photographs of the Clarborough celebrations for the Queen's Coronation. The celebrations were held in the paddocks at Clarborough Hall which was my home. My sisters don't remember much about it (we were very young) but I remember someone from the village - possibly Mr Cobb - coming to ask Daddy if the Parish Council could use the paddocks for the village celebrations. Of course he said "Yes".
As children we didn't have cameras so we have no photographs but if any were taken I would love to have copies. I am more than happy to pay for the photos or make a donation to the church if 'buying the photos' complicates matters.
There is no rush about this, I am sure you are incredibly busy at the moment but if you can find anything I should be very grateful. We all loved Clarborough Hall very much and were incredibly sad when we had to sell it after my Father's death.

[31 May 2012] Two Commonwealth War Grave-style memorial stones are still to be seen in the upper graveyard of St.John the Baptist church, Clarborough. Has anyone made a transcript of the inscription and/or know anything of the person remembered there? Details please to Greg, Newsletter Editor (see Newsletter section for contact details).
