Which? has open-source apps (FREE) recommended as replacements/alternatives to Microsoft’s standard issues of Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop - read their latest newsletter here...
In terms of computer applications, the key aspect of open source movement is that they are both free and also free to copy and share - this latter point is summarised by the term copyleft, a direct opposite to the common copyright warning.
Copyleft encourages users to share, copy, distribute the item to anyone they feel would like it!

OpenOffice.org - a full office suite including word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database and drawing applications that is compatible with Microsoft Office. We use Apache OpenOffice to produce our sister publication, Clarborough & Welham Newsletter.
Libre Office is a ‘fork’ from the original OpenOffice programme and provides an alternative to Apache’s application having some significant advantages.
